So, this is my first foodie post. We haven’t left the UK yet, but I thought it wise to get some practice in. That said, I won’t be posting about Wednesday night soups, only meals that are relevant to Latin America. On Saturday night we had to be in Brixton to see a band, so we decided to arrive a bit early to find a snack and have some drinks with friends. I’d been sniffing around on the internet to find a place to fulfil a fried chicken craving, but that went out of the window when we realised the only place to sit would be outside. It was rather chilly so we wandered further in to Brixton Market, dodged some hipsters and ended up at Santafereño.
What won it for us was that it was inside and warm, but of course we were excited to be doing something ‘programme related’. The place is pretty markety and basic, and the laminated menus and decor had seen better days, but we felt like it might be the sort of place we would encounter on our travels.
We tried a Columbian lager called Club Columbia which I can’t complain about, and we shared a starter called a Picada. I said to Alex, let’s just order a starter as I bet it is immense. I was not wrong, for the most reasonable price of £7, we were served a veritable mountain of salad, chips, fried plantain chips, steak, chicken, pork, crunchy pork scratchings and chorizo. Really really naughty, but seeing as we were off to drink beer all night, it probably set us up nicely. In terms of taste, it wasn’t the most amazing or flavoursome thing I’ve ever had, but it was fun to share whilst talking about our escape. All in all I’d say if you like meat and cheap eats it’s a winner – the table next to us were having steak as big as a dustbin lid!
