The Monasterio de Santa Catalina in Arequipa is one of the top attractions of the town. The convent used to house almost 200 secluded nuns until it opened its doors to the public in 1970. There are still about 20 nuns there. It is a photographers paradise due to the wonderful contrasts of bold colours as it was predominantly built in the Mudéjar style, adapted by the Spanish from the Moors, which is rarely found in colonial buildings. The monastery itself is huge (20,000 square meters), and can take you the best part of a day to visit it all. It is still considered one of the most important and prestigious religious building in Peru, and for good reason; it truly is a quiet, peaceful and atmospheric haven from the dust and bustle of the city.
For this reason the Monasterio de Santa Catalina deserves it’s very own picture post.
Arequipa es preciosa!!!La mas bella de las ciudades del Perù. El convento es un lugar magico: l’atmosfera, el silencio, los colores, ese azul!!!!
